The taller man on the right was Smith Buel Barker. He is standing on the grounds of the Veterans Home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was born 11 Sept. 1847 in Franklin, Oakland County, MI to Willis and Mary Coe Barker. He moved to Allegan County with his parents in the mid 1850s and they appear on the 1860 census in Manlius Twp. S. B. Barker served in the Civil War in Company H of the 28th Michigan Regiment. Sept. 1, 1877, he married Laura E. Hurlburt, daughter of Lorin and Lydia Dunham Hurlburt of Fennville. He passed away at the Veterans Home on 8 Jan 1931 and is buried in that cemetery. There is a military headstone for him in Hutchins Cemetery in Allegan County, but he is definitely buried in the Veteran's cemetery in Grand Rapids. , ,Smith B. Barker was my 2nd great grandfather. He was known to reach 6 ft. 7 inches in height. His height enabled him to lie about his age and enlist when he was too young. He had three older brothers who also served. George Henry Barker, Harvey Milo/Milo Harvey Barker, and Reuben D. Barker. , ,I have a copy of this photo and other. I have the original tintype of his military photo, which someone copied from my Ancestry tree to FindAGrave. , ,Thank you, ,Peggy J. Mawby
