SAUGATUCK, JUNE 12, 2009 -- A fun-filled
competition among 30 local bowlers enlivened Lakeview Lanes in
Douglas earlier this month at the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical
Society's 2nd Annual Bowl-O-Rama fundraising party, netting more
than $3,000 to benefit the Society's Old School House project and
Museum.
Funds were contributed primarily by community
supporters who pledged to donate varying amounts per pins scored by
their favorite bowlers, as well as team-registration fees. Teams and
spectators alike enjoyed complementary food, "50/50" raffle drawings
(in which ticket proceeds were shared equally by the winners and the
Society), plus a wide variety of prizes contributed by 20
Saugatuck-Douglas businesses, ranging from store gift certificates
and gift baskets to artworks, housewares and popular local outdoor
attractions.
The Historical Society has been refurbishing the
landmark Old School House at 130 Center Street in Douglas since
early 2007, aimed at preserving and converting the building into a
community Discovery Center where children and adults alike can
explore the area's genealogy, history, culture, ecology and
architecture through recreational activities, educational programs,
special events and access to the Society's growing archive of local
artifacts, photos, records and newspapers.
The Museum, founded in 1992, occupies the
historic Saugatuck Pump House at 735 Park Street, along the west
shore of the Kalamazoo River at Mt. Baldhead Park, a short walk
north from the Saugatuck Chain Ferry landing. Offering new
exhibitions every year, the Museum is open Noon to 4pm daily from
Memorial Day (May 24) through August, then Saturdays/Sundays in
September and October. Admission and parking are free. Tel: (269)
857-7900.
