JULY 22 "TUESDAYS 'TIL NOON" LECTURE
EXAMINES HOW VIEWERS INTERPRET ART

SAUGATUCK, JULY 11, 2008 -- "Tuesdays 'til Noon", a weekly series of one-hour lectures at the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society Museum, will present exhibit director Ellen Sprouls discussing "Capturing Moments in Time; The Viewer as Interpreter" on Tuesday, July 22, at 11 a.m.

Sprouls, a Historical Society member and frequent volunteer, is director of the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven and previously a developer/director of Impressions 5, a hands-on science museum in the Lansing area. Her talk focuses on understanding the mechanisms we use to interpret what we see, especially in paintings or photographs.

Better understanding of visual interpretation, according to Sprouls, enriches the experience of viewing exhibits such as the Museum's current "13 Moments in Time: The Artist as Storyteller”, a selection of artworks done in Saugatuck between 1898 and 2002, for which each picture was selected to depict a specific moment in time and tell a story about life in the area.

The Tuesdays 'til Noon talks are held in the south gallery of the Museum, with audience capacity limited to 50 guests so early arrival is recommended. The program ends promptly at noon when the Museum opens for the day.

Founded in 1992, the Saugatuck-Douglas Museum occupies the historic Saugatuck Pump House at 735 Park Street, along the west shore of the Kalamazoo River at Mt. Baldhead Park, a short walk north from the Saugatuck Chain Ferry landing. Parking and admission are free, donations welcomed. Tel: (269) 857-7900.
