JULY 25, 2008 -- Andrew
Schrock, among the crew from Paragon Painting LLC, Kalamazoo,
follows instruction to remove only loose flaking paint from The Old
School House in preparation for repainting. Preservationists argue
against stripping or power sanding historically coated surfaces,
noting that the old paint is part of the building's heritage, and
wherever firm must be left in place to continue protecting the wood
while giving the new paint richer texture and historic interest. The
new topcoat, selected by the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society to
match a white popular in the mid-1800s, will have a satin finish
slightly more gray than the current white surface.
