SEPTEMBER 4, 2009 -- An original painting of
Saugatuck's Big Pavilion as seen from the Kalamazoo River, created
and signed by long-time Saugatuck artist Martha Severt in 1983, was
donated recently to the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society by
owners Bill Pluim of Grandville and his sister Joan Raffenaud of
Kalamazoo, and accepted for the Society by Jim Schmiechen, exhibit
curator for the Society's Museum.
"The Severt painting is a
great addition to the Society's collection of works by well-known
local artists", Schmiechen says. |
"The Big Pavilion was a primary force in making
our town one of Michigan's most famous places for summertime
entertainment, and we are gratified to have this impressive view to
help everyone remember it."
The donation was formalized following Pluim's
photo presentation concluding the Society's summer series of
"Tuesday Talks" at the Old School House in Douglas, revisiting his
teen years working at his family's Oval Beach concession stand in
the 1960s.
