LIBRARY "MOVIE NIGHT" MOVES TO THE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE
FOR NOV. 6 SHOWING IN "WOMEN OF THE 1950s" SERIES

OCT. 31, 2008 -- The 1952 movie "Pat and Mike", starring Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy and directed by George Cukor, will be shown at The Old School House Discovery Center, 150 Center Street in Douglas, on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7pm., presented by Saugatuck-Douglas District Library and The Friends of the Library (FOL) as fifth in a series of seven featuring women stars of the 1950s. Admission is free, with free popcorn courtesy of FOL.

According to FOL spokesman Jim Hanson, the free movie program began as a community service last year in the library but has gradually outgrown space available there. "We are very fortunate that the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society's progress in refurbishing The Old School House as a new Discovery Center now enables them to co-sponsor our program. We greatly appreciate the tremendous effort the Society and local contributors have put into preserving this treasure of a building, and we hope our movie program will help extend that appreciation throughout the entire community."

 
The free-movie program, presented every other Thursday, to-date has highlighted significant film artists such as Frank Capra, Preston Sturges, Humphrey Bogart and Carole Lombard. The current series, featuring Grace Kelly, Judy Holliday, Audrey Hepburn, Kim Novak and other actresses of the 1950s, will later conclude with two additional films: "Some Like It Hot" (1959, Billy Wilder) with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon on Nov. 20; and "Written On The Wind" (1956, Douglas Sirk) with Lauren Bacall and Rock Hudson on Dec. 4.

The Discovery Center renovation was set in motion on November 2, 2006, when the Historical Society purchased The Old School House with the proceeds of an initial 12-month fundraising campaign. Now nearly finished, its main floor space soon will house a Welcome Center for visitor orientation to our community and the Center's resources, with a Discovery Room where visitors can access the Historical Society's extensive collections and local genealogy research plus local/state history materials from the District Library. It also will offer an Exhibition Room for scheduled exhibits, with a "Creation Station" where anyone can create and present public displays using their own private collections and memorabilia. Additional community-oriented programs are anticipated through the Center's partnership with the Library and Saugatuck Public Schools.
