PATRICK
DEVINE
Patrick
Devine and his wife, Bridget McCarey Devine, were
both born in Belfast, Ireland,
and came to America, landing
in Philadelphia
in 1860. He was a salt-water sailor and also worked in the Naval
shipyards and in 1861 enlisted in the Civil War.
After the war the family
came to Douglas, where they lived the remainder of their lives, and for many
years Mr. Devine sailed the Great Lakes. There
were five children born, of whom Joseph and William survive; deceased are Mary
Ann Slighter and Katherine Locke, both of Grand Rapids, and Nellie Thew of Allegan.
Mr. Devine died at the
age of 73 and Mrs. Devine at 83, a much respected couple.
