HANNIBAL H. GOODRICH

Hannibal Goodrich was born in Edwards, N. Y., in 1842 and lived a life of 77 years, nearly all of which were spent in Newark, as his father Dr. C. B. Goodrich came in 1843 and stopped at the mouth of the Kalamazoo and a few years later built the Goodrich homestead at that part of Newark called Ganges, where Hannibal spent his life with small exception.

At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in Co. D, of the 10th Michigan Cavalry, served as corporal ten months; he was promoted to second then first lieutenant and was transferred to the First U. S. heavy artillery and received his commission as captain just before the war closed, when he returned to the old home in April, 1866.

In December, 1874, he was married to Miss Emma Leland and this union was blessed with two sons, C. Lloyd of Lansing and Dr. Neil Goodrich of South Haven. Hannibal Goodrich was a man most devoted to his family, a man of such good character and citizenship that his memory will ever be cherished by those who knew him.

His wife became an invalid several years before his death and he gave her the tenderest care and attention, and after his death she lived in South Haven until she too passed away a few years later.
