WARREN PRENTICE

Warren Prentice was born in Stonington, Conn., Feb. 10, 1827, of English parentage.

At the age of 18 he chose to become a salt water sailor and signed for his first voyage a whaling trip which lasted four years; this was followed by several whaling and sealing voyages around Cape Horn, and other trips to Liverpool and Havre, France.

In 1860 he came to Michigan, bought a farm which he sold and enlisted in Co. A, 4th Michigan Cavalry, in the Civil War, serving till its end, when he returned to Michigan, and bought another farm in south Saugatuck township where he lived until his death in 1916 at the age of 89.

He was married to Miss Betsey Burdick in 1869 and they moved to their farm home which had to be cleared and built a large comfortable home on what is now U. S. 31, but then was only a cow path through the woods.

Here they became the parents of five children, John of Saugatuck, Alfred of Chicago, Joseph W., president and manager of the Saugatuck Fruit Exchange, and deceased are George and Eva L. Pshea. Mrs. Prentice died in 1921, aged 82. They were a respected couple enjoying the fruit of their labor.
