S. C. REED
The spirit of progress
which has ever been a dominant factor in the development of Michigan found a
worthy representative in Samuel C. Reed, who was a native of Canada, came
across the border into Michigan and settled in Saugatuck township, in the
village of Douglas in 1868; in 1880 they came to Saugatuck and in both places
the trade of blacksmithing was carried on by Mr. Reed, also that of wagon
making and he dealt in agricultural implements, buggies, wagons and harness, in
the day before the automobile. His fellow citizens recognizing his ability and
enterprise conferred upon him various positions of trust. For two term he was
village president, and a trustee five years, and whether in office or not he co-operated
with all the best interests for the town. He was a member of the M. E. church
and Saugatuck Lodge F. & A. M.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Reed
have passed away and are survived by two sons, Roger and David.
