CHRISTOPHER SCHULTZ

Chris. Schultz was always accounted one of the successful, well-to-do farmers in Saugatuck township, his farm being 160 acres, just out of Douglas.

Born in Germany in 1841, the son of Fritz and Sophia Schultz, who emigrated to America in 1852, settled first in Chicago for three years when they came to Saugatuck and bought of Jonathan Wade -a forty acre tract adjoining Douglas. Very little of this land was cleared but they transformed it into a fine, productive farm, and in 1888 he erected a substantial modern home which was enjoyed by the family many years.

In 1867 Mr. Schultz chose for his life mate Miss Emma Walbrecht, a daughter of Henry and Emma Walbrecht and they have become the parents of seven children, six sons, Frederick, Lewis, Henry, George, Charles and William and one daughter, Minnie, the wife of Thomas Bennett, all living.

Whatever office was asked of Mr. Schultz he did to the best of his ability. He served on the school board several terms. Socially he was a member of Knights of the Maccabees.

Mr. Schultz died Nov. 25, 1923, followed by Mrs. Schultz, June 28, 1924, both attaining the octogenarian age and seeing many changes in Douglas vicinity.
